Rip Off Alert
Hey Guys,
Here’s a quick note - a reader alerted me to the fact that this blogger had taken my content and posted it on her WordPress blog. I was quite astounded since the only thing she changed was the title - cripes she didn’t even change the picture.
I was going to contact wordpress support -but apparently it’s closed and has been for a while. What is up with that?
You might want to stop by and make sure she hasn’t ripped you off as well.

That’s pretty crappy. Thanks for alerting us - we will certainly keep an eye out. I don’t know where Support has been lately. I know they usually close on weekends. Keep trying them! That kind of behavior shouldn’t be tolerated. In fact, I believe its illegal.

This is Lea, the supposed thief. Someone had sent me a couple of post because I had a blog block. I trusted said person. Apparently she took it not me. If any of you take a moment and look at my WHOLE blog, you will see, it is 99% all my words, not stolen content.
I am sorry this happened. I have taken the steps to rectify this and have a call into the lady who stole your content.

The thing is, even if the post was sent to you by another person, why wasn’t that person then credited with it? For example, i once sent Writer Chick a story to post on her page. She did, and posted my name as the author. i had my daughter post a poem on my page and i posted her as the author. See? Easy.
You did not do that and you absolutely should have if it was actually from another person as you claim. Because it still would have been stealing, i think anyway.
It is brave that you came here to apologize, but stealing, or being an accomplice to stealing, is a grave issue. This does not only infringe on the art of Writer Chick, it totally damages your credibility.
Well said, Christine - and also, it hurts other bloggers, since clearly several bloggers had their content used without their knowledge or permission. Which is why I refuse to delete this post, despite the fact that ‘lea’ asked me to. I owe it to any other bloggers whose content may have been stolen to provide the links for them to check out. And if they (any of them) want to email me, I have further info for them.

I made a mistake, I trusted someone. Blast me all you want. It is a sad commentary when you condemn someone you do not know, who is a decent person but has been put in a really crappy position.

See, this is the problem, all you are doing is making excuses, blaming someone else and then acting like you are somehow a victim. I don’t know what kind of person you are - but I do know what kind of blogger you are and I don’t respect the way you operate. If someone else write’s your content (as this woman supposedly did) then they should be credited - the fact that she pilfered it, then passed it on to you as her own and then you passed it on to your readers as your own is a soup that you made all by yourself. That you are surprised that people are pissed off says something about you to me, and it ain’t good.

If it was a wordpress blog, alert support. If it was another blog hosting service, contact their support. I’m pretty sure it goes against all the rules for any of the hosting services. At the very least they can warn the person and possibly get them to apologize. Can’t let it just go.

Well, there must have been more than one stolen post at Lea’s site because I poked around and one had her living in West Virginia and another in Maryland I believe so if she is sincerely trying to make amends then I would hope she would make sure the rest of her posts are also her own. Just makes me wonder why someone would want to have a blog if they don’t want to be the one posting o n it. Just have your website. Only post when/if you want. Don’t need an assistant or anything.

I actually stopped replying and commenting on people’s blog’s as maybe some of my blog friends may have noticed. I found that one of my comments to a blog, was rewritten or copy and pasted or whatever as one of their comments on someone eles’s blog.
If anyone reads my blog, and my blog comments you’ll see I write in simple words, just like the simpleton I am but it comes straight from my heart.. I couldn’t believe it when I read it, I knew it was my writing, I knew it was my feelings,I knew it was my craziness. It wasn’t even a post it was a fucking comment for god’s sake. I’ve been to scared to approach the issue as I just kinda believed that that goes on in blog world. Thanks Annie for confronting this. I’ve been so hurt for months but was just keeping my mouth shut and thinking fuck it, I’m not commenting anymore on blogs. It even stopped me writing on my blog for a while.
Phew!! So yes obviously this does go on, I’m a bit relieved really to be reading this and all the comments. I thought all you guys just accepted that people just copy you. Thank God you don’t. :). This girl doesn’t either.
I’m actually crying here cause this situation has been eating me away for months, and I feel relief that you guys don’t accept this .I’ve not even dared to read blogs cause of this….Can you believe that.

OK, Annie, I’m well pissed off, and for me that’s a strong word.
Other blogs and sites link to my research posts all the time, even having separate threads. I encourage this; it is about the freeflow of ideas. But I am always accredited, and always linked, and as such it works in my favour, increasing the hits.
This is of a different order, though. This is about a writer/bloggers’ integrity. I think we should not leave it here. I think other bloggers should write about this and pass the message - use the internet for what it is good at - saying we, as writers, won’t take it.
As such, I want to be part of it and post about this, and link to this thread. I won’t do so unless you give me your permission here.

So I have been away for a few days Writer Chick and come back to see all this.. wow. That was a very sobering experience to read through this post and the comments.
I am just disappointed that WP allowed her to continue blogging at all.

I have to say I’m shocked, WC, and I’m so sorry you had to go through this. Some people just don’t have respect for people’s work - or for people at all. The usual etiquette is to quote a section of a post and link back to it; it’s certainly not to claim it as your own work. We’ve been seeing a big increase in this kind of thing recently; it’s becoming a bigger nuisance than spam. At least you can delete spam.
And I’m a little surprised at WP’s decision as well. Forgetting the ethical implications for a moment, this is a blatant copyright violation; to let that go with just a warning seems strange from WP’s track record - they zap hundreds of splogs every day for far less.
A story I had published several years ago was reproduced against my wishes in 2004, so I have some experience with this as well. It was actually a high school in Germany if you can believe it; so much for setting an example. It’s still not resolved now. In your case it just pisses me off so much because all someone has to do is go to bligter.com - a site where people licence blog posts for other people to use. Instead they steal them. Unbelievable. You have amazing readers, WC; it’s wonderful to see the response and support.

She just kept saying the same thing over and over, despite the proof people kept offering. Maybe she doesn’t understand fractions or something? 99% perhaps applied to all of the posts she didn’t write.

arrrgghhhh … so frustrating!! i had a poem and a photo stolen and posted on a myspace site a couple of months ago and it hurts, physically hurts when someone steals your content and passes it off as their own. sigh. so sorry this happened to you but glad you were able to resolve it … the people running myspace have not been as accomodating, sigh.

You’ve got company on the naive part. I was bowled over - bigtime. It really did blow my mind. And oh yes, I am fortunate indeed to have such great friends in my internet universe. I was also bowled over by the support - in a really good way though.
