This morning, the host and hostess on the radio station I listen to were chatting up the ‘cleavage incident’ involving Hilary and the Senate floor. She was pro, he was con. No suprise there.
He made the argument that someone running for President should show more decorum and she accused him of objectifying her because she was a woman. Typical he said, she said argument – at best a draw and really does nothing for the debate. Each were too defensive about their view to really get anything out of it. Yawn.
I didn’t have time to check it out before I went to work, so when I got home – I did a search and there it was (the above picture). Now, call me crazy, but I can barely make out whether or not the woman even has enough cleavage to be making such a big whoopty doo about – the picture isn’t good quality and the outfit didn’t exactly advertise the goods, as they say – but so what? Hilary has breasts. Are we all shocked?
Apparently we are. At least it’s being talked about a lot and for the life of me I can’t figure out why. Was it tacky? Maybe, I mean if Teddy Kennedy or John Kerry showed that much chest on the Senate floor while discussing an important issue – it would seem inappropriate to me. Besides that, it’s just too much information. If they were wearing tight, form-fitting slacks I’d find that a little icky too.
I’m not really interested in the sexuality of any legislator. I don’t want to know what kind of underwear they put on in the morning, what their cup size is, or what condom they prefer. You know why? Because it’s private and it falls into the category of their private life. I don’t want to know. I’m more interested in what they are voting for on the Hill than in what they are wearing or not wearing on the Hill.
Yet, the media has gone hog-wild over the fact that Hilary has cleavage and she dared to show it. Was it a ploy on her part? Trying to attract male supporters? I know that actresses and singers go that route – do political candidates? Should they? Is it tacky or no big deal? Personally, it wouldn’t surprise me if it was a tactical move on her part, maybe she was testing the waters. Maybe she felt it would make her seem more youthful, more real, more feminine – and maybe it does. But for me, I’m thinking she should stick to the proper attire that all the other law makers stick with. While it may not be exciting, it is certainly less distracting.
Frankly, I want to know what’s on a candidate’s mind, not what’s under their clothes. I’m not interested in dating them, you know? I’m interested in what they would do in a leadership position – not ah…er…well, any other position.
So my advice to Hilary is put it back where it was. Use your mind and your passion to guide you in your campaign – we all know you’re a woman, no need to prove it.
And shame on the media for acting like it was real news. It was salacious and pretty much crying wolf – on a slow news day you may want to actually look for something good or positive to report – I’m pretty sure we’d rather know about that, than how much giggle a presidential candidate has and any opinions regarding same.

I agree. I find the whole discussion offensive to Hillary specifically and the state of politics in the USA generally. So what? She has breasts and the other candidates have slight bulges in their pants. I don’t want to know about it.

I have to be honest, I’m not really a Hilary fan and I wasn’t defending her here. In fact, I believe had it not been Hilary no one would ever have uttered a peep about it. The fact that it was Hilary made it news. Are we going to get a news alert if Obama has an open shirt appearance somewhere too?
The original article wasn’t even offensive – it was just a fashion writer trying to be topical and comment on a candidate’s fashion sense. That it went any further than that article is what was so stupid in my opinion.

The Clintons have always been politically savvy, so perhaps it was calculated… even the colours she’s wearing goes with that, Hillary’s often in darker power suits… maybe this is to try and soften her image a bit. Why that should fascinate people, I don’t know. So Hillary’s a woman, not a robot; big deal. 😉
Having said that, our news has been dominated by our PM taking a tumble, so we’re not doing much better. I just wish he’d trim his eyebrows… eew. 😯

Me neither. Oh have you seen that ghastly bust (sculpture) that someone did of her? I would have had the man shot myself but I think she likes it. The whole idea that we’d have to sexulaize Hilary to make her more likeable or something is just creepy. I think we got enough of Clinton style sexualization with Billy boy – no need to go around that block again.

Nice to see my native Britain is having an influence on you over the pond. Our tabloid media have been making big political issues out of sex, breasts and behaviour unbecoming a politician for years.
My favourite over the last few years is the politician who cheated on his wife and went to young gays because he was going bald.

It never ceases to amaze me that people assume that our elected officials are not human. She has cleavage because she has breasts because she is a woman. Amazing how that works!
Now, if she had on a WonderBra and displaying them as if they were for sale as most women in this country do, then I could understand the hullabaloo. Instead she’s pretty much just showing collarbone and unless we’ve become a radically Muslim country overnight, that is not inappropriate in this country and is definitely un-noteworthy.

Well, we’re actually not sure. I hear there will be a study funded by congress to find out that very thing. Apparently, the insinuation of cleavage was enough to make some officials suspicious enough to spearhead a committee and investigation. 😆

I think the controversy over her breasts is just part of the larger American hysteria over all things sexual. We’re a prudish culture in a lot of ways.

Politics aside, this issue demonstrates the fine line women must walk in both business and politics. If the woman is too, for lack of a better work, “feminine”, she risks not being taken seriously. But if she is too assertive, too, if you will, mannish, she runs the risk of being called a “bitch”, or worse. I saw this dynamic every day when I worked in corporate America, and I must say I didn’t envy the women managers.
The cleavage incident was a gaff on her part, but the ensuing fracas says more about the media than it does about her. I’ll never vote for her, but jeez, let’s give her a break.

I don’t know…I think this speaks of something else – the incessant obsession with this particular woman. I believe had it been anyone else in the very same outfit, it wouldn’t have even been a blip on anyone’s radar – much less the topic of the day.
While I’ll agree that women do have problems getting respect in the workplace, especially if in management, I think that that is changing and has been more accepted over the years – at least in my experience. But my point in this post is that the media are obsessed with her and frankly I don’t get it. She’s simply another ruthless politician, yet she has somehow been elevated to some special level or as some sort of poster child for women’s rights. To me, that is utterly ironic.

Well, the media is all about selling airtime and papers and magazine, and let’s be frank: Hilary, love her or hate her, does just that. She is intriguing.
I just wish folks would stop obsessing about her rather unprepossing cleavage and focus on how she’s morphed (or been morphed) from a radical liberal feminist into the second coming of Margaret Thatcher. I ain’t buyin’ it! Are you?
