Lights! Camera! Action!

A newbie on my blogroll (and a fabulous writer btw) Paul, wrote a post a while back where he talked about life being a movie. The whole idea tickled me and I’ve been thinking about it.

If you aren’t a movie star, a dare-devil or a railroad tramp, life is boring and lacks adventure for the most part and serves up a healthy portion of the mundane. We get up, go to work, come home, make dinner, surf the web, watch a little television and off to bed, only to repeat the same thing the next day – and the day after that and the day after that. The weekends may have a few highlights – perhaps lunch with a friend, a phone call to or from the folks back home, buying a spiffy pair of shoes at a bargain, maybe even a ballgame. But come 6pm on Sunday, our tummies are already tensing up for the coming work week. We are figuring out lunch menus, schedules to pick up and drop off kids, groceries to be bought, meetings to attend, deadlines to meet. Face it, exciting it ain’t.

So the whole concept of just waking up Monday morning and deciding what movie you want to be in that day has its appeal. Our fantasy life is the thing that keeps us going, isn’t it? Winning the lotto and daydreaming about how you’d spend the money. Thinking about if you could do anything in the world what that would be. Publishing a novel, becoming a celebrity, a world famous chef. We all have the big dreams in our little lives. So why the heck not?

So, here’s the question: If you could make your life any movie what would it be, and why? AND If your life were a movie as it stands today what would it be?

For me, my current life would probably be 9 to 5. Remember that one? All the gals stuck in the cubicle universe with the nasty boss? Yep, that’s me. That’s my life.

If I could have the movie of my choice for my life, I’d pick Rear Window – what more could you want, adventure, mystery, a rough and ready boyfriend who thrives on adventure and gorgeous clothes and looking like Grace Kelly? I’m saying.

So, those are mine. What are yours?

  2. Most days I’m Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.
Some days I’d opt for Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty (or The Grinch) πŸ˜‰

I can relate to that one. But what about your ideal movie life? Which one is that?

  3. Oh, my life is Office Space for sure.

I think I’d like it to be Princess Bride!

    Hey Deb,
Oh no, Office Space – poor girl. πŸ˜‰ Princess Bride was a hoot – did you want a really bendy boyfriend too? πŸ˜‰

  4. Why does it have to be your fantasy life that sustains you? I’d say that by choice my life is and I wish it to be “Serenity”:
The plot keeps twisting and turning, every choice has moral consequences and may be fraught with peril, there is loss and there is new love, and there are good friends standing beside me, fighting with me the whole time.
And yes, I work a 9-5 cubicle world job. I just see my life that way. And it’s true…
Never thought of my life like that before though… great idea WC!

    Hi Matthew,
Oh it doesn’t have to be but I think that often it is. I don’t know the movie Serenity, I will have to look it up. Sounds like fun though.

Well, you’re welcome, but it wasn’t exactly my idea, I pinched it sorta from Paul.

  5. Hi WC,
I tried, but then I began to see my life as a movie as it is. And I just keep hitting the rewind to repeat the good bits over and over again.
I’ll get bored eventually, but not yet!

    Hey Anthony,
I’m glad to hear that there are good bits that you rewind again and again – that’s what it’s all about, yes?

  6. As for me, my life is already a movie- the government has installed a series of cameras around my house in order to keep tabs on me. That’s why I dance around naked so much- gotta please the viewers!

If my life were a movie that was already made, it’d be “The Blair Witch Project,” because both my life and that movie are bullshit.

LMAO! You always make me laugh.

  7. The best I can come up with is Grand Hotel to describe my life, and probably how I’d like it to be as well. The bored guest says “People come, people go, Nothing happens”. Yet it does, and as “small” as those lives are, they’re still fascinating and worthwhile journeys.

I hope that doesn’t sound smug or pretentious, as I’m being neither…

    Hi Brian,
It doesn’t sound smug to me at all. It sounds lovely, actually.

  8. Hi WC,

There are no movies that sufficiently capture my life to give credit to, which is why I occasionally make an effort at writing movie scripts. I also suspect that a huge influx of cash from lottery winnings would only change details and locations. Thus, the best answer I can give for both questions is an eclectic mix of The Adams Family, Green Acres, a strong dash of the Vacation movies, and just a pinch of Animal House, The Jerk, and any one of the Marx Brothers’ movies.

    the Grit

    Hey Grit,
You know, that really works for me. I imagine you to be a mix of all that and more.

    Hi Lucid,
Wow, Moonlight Sonata – that’s nice. Works for me.

  11. My life now is somewhat like The Green Mile hopefully it won’t morph to the end scenes from Natural Born Killers.

The Green Mile! Yes! I can totally see that. NBK is something you might want to shy away from though. But I can understand that some days it is the one that you’re at home in.

  12. Bridgit Jones is not my fantasy movie life. It’s my life today coupled with Drop Dead Fred, trebled with Trainspotting and 28 days Phew!!

I’m in agreence with Anonoyum. Drew Barrymore in 50 first dates would probably be my fantasy life film. To just remembe the day. (bliss ) Oh Yer!! Up In Smoke too. Haha!!( dream on Diane ) and just one more but I can’t remember the name. It’s about these beautiful tribal women in the jungle. I think it’s Amazion something.

Hey Annie, I had turned the computer off and went to bed, but selling myself short with just Bridgit Jones was on my mind. Thanks for this post. Great post.

    Sweet dreams. πŸ™‚

Wow Di, you’ve quite the wild life, eh? I think I’d have a coronary if all those movies were my life. Or…I’d be having a lot of fun.

    Sweet dreams back.

  13. The reason I got back to this was to say I quess I did have a bit of a wild and wonderful life. Like we all have. However today I think the movie that mostly represents my life is Fried Green Tamotoes. πŸ™‚

    Hugs Annie πŸ™‚

So your life is a constantly changing movie. Sounds like fun.
