Okay, so I know you’ve been dying to find out what my mystery plant turned out to be. Yep, it’s a cantaloupe. Or rock melon as A-Mum would say. After weeks of examination, observance and obsession – I have/had a cantaloupe plant. The fruits of my unintended labor are pictured above.
I must say though it was a bit of a disappointment. It looks pretty good in the picture but on the taste meter, not so much. It was quite juicy and smelled great but the flavor and particularly the sweetness just wasn’t really there. Roomie and I split it. I gave one to Zelda and took one to work.
I finally chopped it down and pulled it’s gnarly roots the other day. It is no more. It was threatening to take over the garden on a regular basis and my tomatoes and peppers were getting pretty jealous. They all threatened to revolt. Since I like tomatoes and peppers much more than cantaloupe, I made the hard choice.
I am still not completely convinced that it wasn’t some alien seed planted whilst I slept. Especially since it seemed to be humming a tune which I didn’t recognize and seemed to hover on hot summer days and follow me with its gaze whenever I walked by. The tendrils too, always seemed to reach out toward me and I had dreams of being entangled in them while gasping my last breath. Definitely a hybrid of the Triffod family.
And so that ends the experiment in spontaneous gardening and mystery plants. Who knows what will pop up come Fall or Spring?

Phew! We can all stop holding our breaths. I’ll alert the media. At least you now have the pride of knowing you can grow large fruits. You know, unintentionally.

I love good cantaloupe. But I have seen far more bad and so-so cantaloupe than good, in my lifetime.

I say keep the tomatoes and peppers happy at all costs!
You know, I might sound like I was kidding but actually I am positive the tomatoes and peppers are very relieved that the giant alien melon plant has left our garden patch. I swear I can hear a collective sigh when I go out there.

LOL – Steve. Did you ever see the movie Multiplicity? About the guy who cloned himself 6 times – the last one was mentally challenged and called everybody Steve and always wanted pizza. Hilarioius.

Yeah it was kind of cool. Although, I think I need to read up on melons, they aren’t a fruit I really know much about groiwing. Also, man do they need room. Almost took over the yard. 😉
