Time on my Hands

So, here’s a dumb little meme. There are no rules, nor any tagging to be done – no heads up emails or necessity to figure which of your blogger buddies you will name to carry the life continuum for the meme. Just some questions and answers. I like it. Simple.

1. If you could pause your aging process, at what age would you choose do to it? (Meaning you would not live forever, but live for 90 or so years at whatever age you chose).
Thirty nine – I know, weird choice, huh? But I’ll tell you, that was the age when I felt both smart and beautiful, wise and youthful and I was wearing a size 8 with wild abandon. And I even (honest to God) remember thinking to myself, ‘if I could just freeze right here, right now, that would be perfect.’

2. At what age did you (or will you) consider yourself to be an adult?
I don’t think I’ve found that age yet. Although, at my current age I am expected to pay my bills, rent and feed myself – which really is quite unfair if you ask me. The one thing I always wanted to be when I was a kid was a grown up – once the world believed me, I changed my mind. What can I say, I’m a rebel.

3. What do you think will be your most annoying trait when youโ€™re a senior?
Probably the umbrella I will carry me at all times to whack whatever idiot I come across at any given moment over the head when they annoy me.

4. How does your current life compare with where you thought youโ€™d be at this point when you were young?
I don’t know that I had a particular image of where I thought I’d be at my current age. I never think of things in terms of age or even time. Though I did think I would have married and had children. I did marry at one point, but never had children and I suppose if there was one thing I could change about my life it would be that. I really believe I would have been a good mom and would have loved to have children. Aside from that, I think I’ve always felt that my life would follow my heart for the most part and that it would be a journey that I would try to enjoy.

5. When would you like to retire? What do you see yourself doing with your life after retirement?
I never intend to retire. In my mind, retiring is like raising the white flag. You might as well climb onto your roof and scream, “I’m done world, come and get me.” I also believe that people who retire are generally unhappy. I think that people who remain active and engaged in life live longer and are happier by and large than those who dream of retiring. I will say though, I’d be happy to retire from work-a-day jobs and just make my living writing, but that is no secret and nothing you don’t know already. But really, when I look toward the future, I pretty much figure I’ll die with a pen in my hand or at the keyboard of a computer. Hopefully, the page won’t be stuck to my face and my surviving next of kin can get it published. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So, those are my answers – how about you?

  1. 1. Twenty-seven.
i was so free, i had both my girls, it was the happiest i’ve ever been. i was hopeful and much more compassionate. i had made so much progress with my OCD… i don’t know what happened to make me lose track of the simple.

    2. Nevah!!!!!! Though, i suppose i am technically, i have to say that i feel just as awkward and unsure of myself as i did when i was 13.

    3. Given my compulsive leanings- i will probably be nitpicky. (Sorry girls!)

    4. i plan on posting about this very subject, given the old b-day is looming.

    5. i’d like to retire right now, actually. But that ain’t happenin’ so i’ll just say that i want to be young enough to have the energy to travel the world. i’d love to spend a chunk of time in Ireland. R&i always talk about a houseboat.

i think your answers demonstrate your self-knowledge, comfort. i’d like that for myself.

    Chica-chica,
i don’t know what happened to make me lose track of the simple.
Man did that resonate with me. In fact, it’s something I’ve been thinking about lately. How do we lose track of that? I had to laugh about the awkward thing too – I wonder if it’s a writer phenom? Always feeling a little gawky and out of place? You nitpicky? Nevah! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Oooh, I want to go to Ireland too. I was born on St. Patty’s Day and one of my fantasies is to spend one of my birthdays on the Old Sod. I feel a real strong connection to my Irish side and all things Irish, in fact.

Good answers, my friend. Thanks for sharing.
    Love

  2. Oh, this is a good meme. I may have to steal it from you and do it. But not right now – too tired. LOL. I loved your answers though – 39 surprised me but then I thought about it and it did make a lot of sense. Good for you! I also think it’s great that you will have an umbrella with you at all times to whack the idiots with. I love that idea. And I know that is why my grandmother carried her cane with her cuz she sure didn’t need it for walking! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Hey Teens,
You don’t have to steal it – it’s yours for the taking. Let me know if you do it, I’d like to see your answers too.

Your grams had the right idea it sounds like. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Finally… a picture!!!
    I’m kidding. I’m kidding.
Don’t reach through and grab me. I didn’t think you were over 39 either.
I love your outlook on life and that you’re such a writer that you’d want to go with a pen in your hand minus the piece of paper stuck to your face (which you may want to reconsider because the media would eat that up) guaranteeing a mega success. But hopefully we won’t have to wait for too much longer to see your name in print.

    Happy Friday WC.
    I’m liking you not working.

LOL – yes, this was a sketch done of me in the 50’s by a lovely young man… ๐Ÿ™„

Yes, can you see the photo now? With the caption ‘Writer Chick Stuck on Plotline’? ๐Ÿ˜†

You likey me no worky? How tum? Just curious.

  5. This is brilliant, I may have to have a go at this one, myself. Loved your answers, too… I guess retirement depends on what you would term as “work” I am retired but I still paint and write…

    Cheers

    BC

    Hey BC!
Well see, then I wouldn’t consider you retired. In my mind, retirement is this weird idea that now people must rest for the rest of their lives. Anyway, cheers to you too.

  6. Fun questions. I think I’d like to be 40ish. I was newly divorced, still had a good figure, and had just gotten a fabulous new job. I was excited about the future and felt the world was my oyster (like being 20 again, only much wiser). I expected to work to 65 and beyond as one of the world’s (or at least the Southwest’s) greatest editors.

Now I’m retired but find that I’m as critical and nitpicky about communication as I was when I was being paid for it. And I’m really getting cranky about it because I’m no longer in the trenches doing something about it! WC, if I had your umbrella handy, I’d be rapping writers’ knuckles with it.

Oooh ouch, 30! I better keep that umbrella away from you, lest my knuckles get spanked. ๐Ÿ˜†

  7. The umbrella? It’s so you, Annie.
    Married?
Damn, the things I learn visiting this place.
Maybe you told me and I forgot.
Either way the shmuck missed out on one hell of a woman.
    Must be Alzheimer’s. Oh, God . . .
    And 39?
    That works but I’m going with 42 . . .
    ~m

LOL – a-yup that umbrella will be my trademark. Yes, I did tell you and you forgot. Yes, he was a schmuck. Otay then, 39 for me, 42 for you. Works for me. ๐Ÿ˜‰
