Can You Actually Get Drunk on Food?

Well, I don’t know about you guys, but my answer to that question is, ah..yeah!

I’m afraid we all just try to cram to much joy into too few days this time of year. I actually was quite careful not to eat too much. But when you go to all the parties, plus dig into all the gifts of cookies and treats, via your friendly postman, I guess you’re kidding yourself about watching what you eat.

Not only did I eat, but man did I cook. Yesterday, while preparing the final (hopefully) holiday feat I realized I was dog-tired and I couldn’t figure out why. Then I realized I’d been cooking for a week. First, was all the baking for the postman, my mechanics, the neighbors and so on. Then I made a huge pan of sweet pertater scuffle for Erin’s Christmas party, then the vat of beef veggie soup for Zelda’s Christmas Eve party, which takes two days because you have to do the roast first and since the pot was essentially the size of my sink, I couldn’t cook it up the night before, so up at the crack of dawn. The hilarious thing was trying to fit it into my car in a position that wouldn’t slosh it all over the leather seats on my way to Zelda’s. The next challenge was getting it out of the car and carrying it to Zelda’s front door without throwing my back out. Soup is heavy. Who knew?

Then, once I gained entrance into Zelda’s house, I had the terrible realization that since Zelda doesn’t cook, I had slicing, dicing, chopping and plating to do, which was another hour or so. And finally, on Christmas day, the traditional ham dinner with pie and scalloped potatoes and biscuits and, and, and… Cripes, no wonder I was ready for a nap by noon.

In fact, I’m still in my jammies, sucking down coffee and thinking that I’ll spend the day in bed, reading, unless that’s too exhausting then I’ll just stay in bed. πŸ˜‰

And the food, oh the food, was just so yummy, I had to ‘try’ a little bit of everything. From sweet potater scuffle to the homemade fudge Debbie sent me, to chocolate covered Macadamia’s, tea cookies, brownies, turkey, ham, roast beef. I even managed a couple of gulps of wine.

Can you pass the carb blockers, please? Oh and I’ll have a double alka-seltzer while you’re at it. This morning I woke up and felt positively hungover. No lie.

Of course, I’ll vow never to do it again, only to repeat it next year.

But, it’s hard to complain. Lots of food, lots of friends and just a really good time. From all the presents given and recieved, phone calls and Instant Messaging with friends I don’t get to talk to enough to classic movies watched by the light of Christmas trees and fireplaces. It was all good. All good.

Hope you all had a great time too.

Annie

  2. That image is great, firstly.

And i agree with you- about being drunk on food.
i found out this year how many tamales it takes to destroy my stomach- 4. And i am not a candy eater, meaning throughout the year, i tend to eat pastries rather than candy, but at Christmas i am likely to devour candy like little Charlie does when he buys those chocolate medallions in the original Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, like a little piggy- Ferro Rocher (i tried the dark chocolate ones- ohwa. mya. lorda.) Snicker snowmen, Kisses, caramels, chocolate covered almonds… i never want to eat candy again!

But i am glad that you had a nice Christmas. i’m lounging in my pjs too. And my new fuzzy robe. We had snow on Christmas, Chica! It was awesome. i think God knew how much i was missing my mom & sisters, nieces and nephews, grandparents, and blessed us with snow to take the edge off.

    It totally worked. πŸ™‚

Oh honey, don’t get me started on the candy thang. Yikes, I can never keep candy in my house or it’s gone and I don’t know who makes me eat it, but I’m sure under a spell when it’s around. In fact, I made Roomie take the candy and the pie and get rid of it. I dont care what he does with it but it has to be out of the house.

Snicker snowmen? Oh my, so glad I didn’t make that discovery – I’d really be a mess and probably still eating them.

Snow? Far frickin’ out. I’m so glad you got that little bonus, must really be nice scufflin’ around in your new fuzzy robe, looking out on the snowy landscape. Got a fire too, I hope.

It was great but man am I glad it’s over. My tummy just couldn’t take any more. πŸ˜†

Now, starting tomorrow done to business. I’m so not ready for it, though.

  3. Oh, I bet it’s definitely possible to get drunk on food. And this time of year there are more people getting in on that bad habit! Sorry you had to work so hard with all that cooking though and I hope you get to relax now. Oh, and how in the world is Zelda? I had almost forgotten about her. And what is sweet pertarer scuffle? I’ve heard mention of this sweet potato-ey dish on other blogs but I still have no idea what it is. Okay, I guess that is enough of the third degree for you for now! πŸ˜€

    Hey Teens!
    Yeah, I think you’re right.

Oh, I love to cook but it was a lot, just because of the volume I was cooking, I think. And yeah, that’s over.

Sweet potater scuffle is actually sweet potato souffle. You can find a link to the recipe I used on the post Christmas Bird. I was answering a comment by Christine. If you can’t find it that way, let me know, I’ll scare it up for you.

  4. Oh Annie, sounds like you were quite the Mother Christmas with all that cooking! Bless you! And sounds like you had an amazing time! I’m so glad πŸ™‚
My mum came over for Christmas lunch with CJ and I and she was reading all my Christmas cards and picked up the one from you and asked me who it was from and when I told her she was SO impressed – like you were American royalty – very cute!
All the descriptions of your xmas fare sound a bit foreign to me – it was 45 degrees (that’s 113F to you) here yesterday – it’s been a HOT christmas – hottest on record actually! So we went seafood all the way!!
    Much love to you!
    Sxxx

Simonne, that’s hysterical – American royalty? Moi?

Yes, I heard from Moe that it was a scorcher – seafood sounds kind of good right about now. Sadly, all the really scrumptious Christmas dishes are heavy, heavy, rich and then heavy again. I’m kind of craving salads at this stage and may be eating them through to spring.

Glad you had a lovely day, dear one.

  5. PS – Love the make-over! πŸ™‚

Yeah? It all started because I wanted to turn on that snow widget thingie and then you couldn’t see it so I started checking themes and found one but then the header seemed wrong and off I went. I think I like it too – it’s different – I needed the change. πŸ˜‰

Your Christmas (I wont call it H-O-L-I-D-A-Y, promise :)) sounds absolutely wonderful. I love the cooking process for the whole ordeal. I dont mind the cooking, and was a bit distruntled that I had very little to do this year. Ah well .. Im glad you had a good time, with good food and good people! Only what .. 364 days to go til next time?

LOL Red, too bad you don’t live in my neighborhood – Zelda would have put you to work in a New York second. She loves people who love to cook. Yup – 364 more days to go. πŸ˜‰

  8. Hi WC,

You’ve changed during my absence but, or so some tell me, that is what life’s all about πŸ™‚ I do like the snow.

As to getting drunk on food, I can tell you from personal experience that this is indeed possible. One year my wife had a batch of Jack Daniels Bourbon balls shipped to friends of ours in Canada. Or so we thought until they were delivered to our house too close to Christmas to ship ourselves. Thus, I took them to work as an office treat on the last day before the Holidays. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on one’s point of view, I arrived early as did a friend of mine and, well, we ate the whole box before anyone else came in, rendering us, as the saying goes, drunk on our butts! Learning from this experience, we made it a Christmas tradition until I left the job.

    the Grit

    Hey Grit!
Hope you had a good Christmas. It’s funny you should mention bourbon balls because my friend Debba sent me a few of her special homemade ones and I practically passed out from the fumes alone. Yikes, those babies are potent – I mean, why drink when you can get your libations in a piece of candy. I wonder though, do bourbon balls register on a breathalizer? πŸ˜‰

  9. Had some rockin’ Rumcake. Don’t think it made me woozy though.
Maybe I just didn’t eat enough.

Clearly, you didn’t eat enough – or you didn’t add the bourbon sauce like you were supposed to. πŸ˜‰

  10. Hi WC,

Yes. You should not eat bourbon balls, to excess, and drive. Some of them are the equivalent of half a shot of 80 proof booze, and alcohol is alcohol as far as sobriety is concerned. I’m surprised that there is not a national advertising campaign to impress this idea on society!

Our Christmas went very well indeed, and I can only hope that the cleaning up from it goes as well.

    the Grit

    Hey Grit,
Truth be told, I have a very low tolerance for liquor-soaked candy. I can barely handle the sugar in it. πŸ˜‰

Glad your Christmas was good – what’s up for New Year’s?

  12. Here’s a funny story: a group of friends of mine, my boyfriend and I walk into this Indian restaurant all quiet, looking at each other without much to say. In come the food we ordered and the spices literally got us high. Next, we are giggling like 14 year-olds and talking all sorts of inappropriate topics. Yes, you can get high on food… particularly spicy!

    Tutty!
How are you girl? I believe your story – spices have a weird effect on me too. Hope you had a designated driver. πŸ˜‰
