Barack Obama: Savior or Socialist?

BAROBAMA

I know we’ve been having some fun swapping barbs about political candidates, lately. But I’d like to actually speak in earnest about Senator Barack Obama. I know that there are a lot of people out there who think he is really something – that maybe he is a shining beacon of hope for this country.

Given his charm, good looks and eloquence as an orator, I am not surprised that many feel that he is a breath of fresh air. That perhaps we have someone special in our midst’s. But I’m going to ask you to strip away all those lovely attributes and actually look at what he stands for. Not the poetic language he uses to couch it in, but the actual issues.

Would it surprise you to know that his platform and his ‘to do’ list is almost identical to Hillary Clinton’s? Yes, it really is. Free college, free , pull out the troops, stop funding the military, raise taxes, pour more billions into a the broken educational system, more entitlements, driver’s licenses to foreign nationals who reside illegally in this country. Yep, he’s for all that. Same as Hillary, except moreso. So, for those of you who love Barack but hate Hillary, I’d have to conclude that it is a matter of personality, not issues.

Sure, he likes to use the pretty words, change, peace on earth, what America could be…starry eyes, presidential poses, a preacher’s passionate fire – but those are just words. They are not accomplishments, they are not actions, they are just dressing up the issues that both he and Hillary share. He simply doesn’t have the baggage that Hillary has. Think about it – if Hillary were a junior senator from the midwest, who was an unknown quantity and didn’t have a record or the spouse she currently has – you’d see very little difference between the two. The fact that she has all that ’stuff’ and it’s been published for years in books, newspapers and television shows just means you know who she really is. In Barack’s case, not so much. He’s just a nice, clean-cut guy from the midwest, energetic, intelligent, blah, blah.

Well, there are a couple of things that I’d like to share about him. First of all, there is this little gem – is it impossible to believe that maybe Mr. Obama would agree to some of these ‘goals’ from such avid supporters? I don’t know about you, but my religion has never been able to demand that federal buildings carry certain items on the menu of their cafeterias or provide time/places for which I may pray. Seems a little one-sided doesn’t it?

Then there is this

cheobamajpg

Yes indeed, a Che Guevara flag donning Obama’s Texas campaign office. When asked about it, Obama’s people said it maybe was ‘inappropriate.” Excuse me? Inappropriate? The man refuses to wear an American flag lapel button but this is okay? Does he know who/what Che was? If not, let me give you some highlights:

Guevara joined Castro’s revolutionary Cuban army in 1956 as a top commander and Castro’s personal physician. He helped Castro topple the regime in Havana in 1959.
As Castro’s right-hand man he ordered the execution of hundreds of people while in charge of the La Caba prison. He said about the mass killings of innocent people,

“To send men to the firing squad, judicial proof is unnecessary. These procedures are an archaic bourgeois detail. This is a revolution! And a revolutionary must become a cold killing machine motivated by pure hate.”

another memorable quote:
“Hatred as an element of struggle; unbending hatred for the enemy, which pushes a human being beyond his natural limitations, making him into an effective, violent, selective and cold-blooded killing machine – this is what our soldiers must become.”

and:

“Blind hate against the enemy creates a forceful impulse that cracks the boundaries of natural human limitations, transforming the soldier into an effective, selective and cold killing machine. A people without hate cannot triumph against the adversary.”

I find it difficult to believe that a man who was educated in an Ivy League school would be unaware of Guevara or his political stance – but maybe he doesn’t. But if he doesn’t, should he be in a position to lead the free world?

Then there is the matter of the global poverty act. Sounds impressive doesn’t it? Sounds altruistic and humane? Yeah, it sounds good, until you stop to consider the following:

It would demand that the president develop “and implement” a policy to “cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015 through aid, trade, debt relief” and other programs.

When word about what appears to be a massive new spending program started getting out, the reaction was immediate.

“It’s not our job to cut global poverty,” said one commenter on a Yahoo news forum. “These people need to learn how to fish themselves. If we keep throwing them fish, the fish will rot.”
Cliff Kincaid (Accuracy in Media) published critique of the plan stated, the adoption (of global poverty act) could “result in the imposition of a global tax on the United States” and would make levels “of U.S. foreign aid spending subservient to the dictates of the United Nations.”

Kincaid said the legislation, if approved, dedicates 0.7 percent of the U.S. gross national product to foreign aid, which over 13 years he said would amount to $845 billion “over and above what the U.S. already spends.”
The plan passed the House in 2007 “because most members didn’t realize what was in it,” Kincaid reported. “Congressional sponsors have been careful not to calculate the amount of foreign aid spending that it would require.”

The bill institutes the United Nations Millennium Summit goals as the benchmarks for U.S. spending.

Mr. Obama has said of the bill:

“With billions of people living on just dollars a day around the world, global poverty remains one of the greatest challenges and tragedies the international community faces,” Obama said. “It must be a priority of American foreign policy to commit to eliminating extreme poverty and ensuring every child has food, shelter, and clean drinking water. As we strive to rebuild America’s standing in the world, this important bill will demonstrate our promise and commitment to those in the developing world.

“Our commitment to the global economy must extend beyond trade agreements that are more about increasing profits than about helping workers and small farmers everywhere,” he continued.

“It is time the United States makes it a priority of our foreign policy to meet this goal and help those who are struggling day to day,” a statement issued by supporters, including Obama, said.

Now, I’m a little confused – I thought we weren’t supposed to be the babysitters of the world. It’s not our business that Saddam Hussein and the Taliban were executing people, torturing people, and all their other many violations of human rights. Yet, somehow now it’s our job to feed the world and he wants a law that will require the United States to take nearly 1% of its Gross National Product to feed the rest of the world, above and beyond what we already give to foreign aid. This country gives more aid, financial and otherwise than any other country in the world – not to mention private charities to which millions of Americans give to daily. Yet, now our taxes (which will likely have to be raised to pay for this and many other programs) must go toward more of this?

So, which is it? Are we to stay out of things and mind our own business or take care of the whole world. Oh and making the United Nations an integral part of this is even better, don’t you think? They’ve been wanting to dictate what America can and cannot do for years now – and soon they’ll be running the country if this sort of thing comes to pass.

And last but not least, there was that statement that Mrs. Obama made a few days ago in which she stated that it was the first time in her adult life where she felt proud of her country. Okay, excuse me? The first time? Really? I mean, there is nothing, absolutely nothing that she could have been proud of before her husband, gave all these people ‘hope.’ And while we’re on the topic – are we hopeless? When did Americans become hopeless. I think that Americans are the most hopeful, positive people in the world but apparently, I’m wrong and we’re all filled with despair and longing for someone to come along and make us feel safe and loved. And apparently that person’s name is Barack Obama.

It’s making me a bit uncomfortable to realize that I am beginning to see parallels between the Obama’s and the Clinton’s. The husband is charming and charismatic, the wife is strong, angry, controlling, assertive. While Mrs. Obama has more finesse than Hillary ever did – she really still does remind me of her. The power couple, poised for success, poised for national stardom. It’s a little spooky.

But I have to ask – what exactly has this man done – period? I mean what accomplishments does he have that even give anyone an idea that he could lead the country? Truly, what are they? I’ve heard people asked about this several times and no one seems to be able to point to anything. Not one accomplishment – he’s a first term senator who thinks he’s ready to lead the country. Based on what? Giving everybody hand outs and placebos to make them believe that their lives are somehow better by having the government even more involved in their daily lives? Who would hope for that?

Personally, I think he is a socialist who comes in a nice, trendy package. But no matter how pretty wrapping might be – what’s inside isn’t any better than what Hillary has to offer. And if you believe otherwise, I’m afraid you are kidding yourself, my friend. I really do.

  1. Oh WC –
I don’t think that Obama is a Savior or a Socialist.

Now…let’s see – this Muslims for Obama site that you linked to…
I’m not sure why you cite it…Surely you don’t think that a candidate has ties to any dick and harry that has a website? Are you suggesting that they have a team that scours the web and disassociate themselves with…

Furthermore- I’m cringing in fear – MUSLIMS!! YIKES!! They are devil worshipers right? … No, no…they hate America because we are free right?.
C’mon. They are no different than Christians. We have right wing wackjobs as well. Peace love on sunday – kill a doctor on monday type stuff.
    Religion clouds the mind.

The problem with Google is that it allows you to
1.) Find data to support your propositions or
2.) Find data to undermine positions you don’t agree with.
The Muslim link and picture of Che are two examples.

Hillary and Obama are practically the same on issues. Yes, it is personality.
No he’s not going to save the world.

But war mongering and men running around trying to take measures of their penis isn’t going to help either.

Go to his website and look up his accomplishements, but I know you won’t.
    It’s ok.

Try a post on who you support and what issues are important to you. It’s easy to state what you are against.

    What are you FOR?

    Peace,
    P

You know, Phil, the point of this post was not to trade insults. So, for me to take up any of your ‘points’ seem futile at best. I wrote this post because I have genuine concerns about this man. I had a bit of experience with PR/Marketing and I can tell you, he is a PR machine. There is nothing substantive about this man that I can find and I have looked, not because I have any interest in supporting him – since, as you know, politically, we are on different sides of the spectrum, but because I am fascinated (as I was with Bill Clinton) about this fascination with him on the part of others. And yes, of course, since this was a post about my concerns I brought up what some of my concerns were – things that struck me as red flags. So, no, I wasn’t going to publish a bunch of testimonials about him from friends and supporters. I’ve never made any secret about where I stand politically on this blog – so, I can’t see how this would surprise you – since you’ve read my blog at least a few times. Certainly, you already know what I am for.

And I have to say, that I’m surprised and disappointed that you would make an attempt to flame/shame me for having written the post. Though the fact, that you didn’t have any substantive argument to counter my concerns tells me that I am right to have those concerns.

I don’t have any problem with people who have different points of view, or if people disagree with me – but I’d rather have an intelligent debate, than swap insults. And quite frankly, I’m not going to. So, if this is all you have to add to the discussion, let’s just leave it here. If you want to make fun of me, or run me down, you’ll have to do it elsewhere – not here.

  2. IMHO-Being from Massachusetts anyone remotely associated with Deval Patrick deeply disturbs me.
    Just words . . .
    Great pic, as well.
Like Easter Island there’s much mystery about the man
I’m not even going to touch the Che flag.
    Sheesh

    Hey Mikey,
I don’t really know anything about Deval Patrick, except that he is now the governor of your state, yes? Although, Ger made a comment that told me he didn’t like him either. Yes, there is a lot of mystery about this man – and that bothers me. Especially since the press seems to dig up dirt faster than a Hoover – I’m stymied by the fact that there seems to be nothing. It seems a little too good to be true.

  3. Meh, they’re all politicians and by now you know how I feel about all of them. McCain is just as big a swine as Obama or Hillary or (insert name of politician here). I am actually amused at this latest accusation of infidelity re: McCain and the lobbyist…it’s like the Dems. are now getting back for the whole Clinton-Lewinsky fiasco. It’s all shit, all around–politics is. That being said, I’d rather it be this system than the rest, although (as you may have guessed by now) I tend to lean toward Socialism…but only in theory. In practice? Not so sure. I am a political refugee from a former communist country (Romania) who came here in 1980 to escape “Socialism.” I don’t agree with many things going on in the U.S. now and actually am considering leaving this country to live somewhere else, but I’m wise enough to recognize that out of all the evils, this is the lesser one (our system, I mean). And so it goes. Another election, another set of running pigs.

Oh (S)wine…my little pessimist. Yes, I know you hate the politicians equally and maybe you’re smarter than the rest of us just for that reason alone. But I do find it interesting that you are originally from Romania – it must have been quite a culture shock to come here.

As to the Dems getting back for the whole Lewinsky fiasco, I think they’ve been working on that for the last 7 1/2 years, personally. But that is probably an entire series of posts, which we’ll try to avoid for now. 😉

  4. Hi WC,

Obama isn’t a socialist. He, like Hillary, is a communist. Not a Marxist-Leninist communist mind you, which believes that everyone should be equal, but the modern variant as seen in the USSR and China, that figures the ruling elite will always be needed to make decisions for the lessor citizens. All you have to do is listen to their speeches to realize that they think they are inherently better than the common person and, thus, have an inherent right to be in charge. Oh, to get past the code they use, replace Government, State, and such with the appropriate personal pronoun.

I’d like to point out that people like these are exactly why the Second Amendment is in the Bill of Rights, as demonstrated by how badly they want it removed.

    the Grit

    Hi Grit,
Guess there aren’t too many takers on this post and I guess I’m not too surprised. Still, I had to say what was on my mind.

As to the communism angle – I’d definitely agree with you about Hillary – but this Obama person is so mysterious and so little is known about him, I guess I’m not quite ready to make that leap. But then, that is the thing that confounds me about him.

As to the need for the continuance of the 2nd Amendment – I agree that and other reasons are a perfect argument for keeping it going. Yikes, eh?

Hey, Girlfriend…. Interesting piece you got here!! lol

You might find this interesting: http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/index.asp?cycle=2008

Ron Paul doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning the race, but let me tell you this: I’m going to vote for him on one simple fact. He’s run his campaign with a positive bottom line.

The rest of the schmucks running can’t even stay out of DEBT while they’re buying up votes! What makes ANY of them think they have what it takes to get America out of the mess it’s in???

Personally, I don’t think it matters who’s in the White House, cynic and conspiracy theorist that I am ;-)… hopefully those spaceships full of aliens will beam us up before much longer!

    LOLOL

    love you!!!

    Hey Gracie!!!!! (((((hugs)))))
Yeah, I know there are those out there who are lodging their protest votes with Ron Paul – which in principle I understand but in reality I fear only means a vote for Hillary. I know it’s crazy but I still think she is going to snatch victory away from Obama – she’s just so good at stealing things, you know?

My little conspiracy theorist, love you to pieces. And hey maybe there is room on that spaceship for me too. Frankly, I could use a vacation. 😆

  6. Hey Annie, I have the same concerns as you for the media darling.
Strange how the media is so taken with him that they have lost their invesitgative instinct. Watch them go after others with no mercy. Obama? Why do they not at least report some of his ties with communist leader and friend Frank Davis? Why do they not report the Larry Sinclair accusation? Granted it may or may not be true on the Sinclair allegation, but at least the media if it were others would have reported it. No, they are in love and I am afraid the groupies and others of his fan club may not like the results we may have down the road..

Totally agree with your statement:”Now, I’m a little confused – I thought we weren’t supposed to be the babysitters of the world. Hey Ange!
Yes, it is a little obvious that the press is giving Mr. Obama a pass. Which only tells me they are by and large supporters/fans of his. I don’t know what there might be in his past to dig up – though everyone seems to have something and the press is not queasy when it comes to digging up dirt, so the utter lack of this dirt digging when it comes to Mr. Obama is suspect.

I wonder though, how much of it is actually about the man, as opposed to the symbol he represents – the prospect of his being the first black president seems to be over-riding all sense of logic and inspection – not only about who he is, but what he plans to do and whether or not he has the experience and capabilities for the job.

You know, it’s not really difficult for someone to stand up and tell people what they want to hear. It’s not difficult to play on people’s fears or fantasies – and if you are good with crowds and a good speaker it can be close to effortless. But I think people have to really stop and consider that this is not a CEO job for a PR firm. This is the job of leading the most powerful nation in the world and truly a job where you hold people’s lives in your hands. While snappy phrases and platitudes sound nice in a speech in a stadium, they do little to solve serious questions or life and death situations.

Whether people want to admit it or not, we are a country at war. And fireside chats won’t cut it, with suicide bombers and tyrants who encourage and pay their people to become suicide bombers. Though it’s a lovely thought that we could all sit down and talk things out, we have to consider with whom we are dealing. They are not of our culture, nor of our reality. They are of a culture of violence, fear and force. Crumpets and tea will not solve the problem.

Frankly, I think watching Hilary’s campaign is alot like watching the Titanic sink…. the “end” starts off slowly and then builds momentum with time and pressure. Just watch for all the rats that start jumping THAT ship SOON! LOLOL

So who you voted for Annie girl?

LOL Gracie, me in silver latex isn’t something anybody wants to see – not even aliens. 😉

I don’t know about Hillary – she has had so many more lives than a cat, I think it’s unwise to count her out. In fact, I think the cat fight will go all the way to the convention with them. Call me crazy, but that’s still what I think.

My guy is out of the race. In terms of who I will vote for come November? It may be more a matter of who I will vote against. As I’ve been saying for a while now – this election cycle has been filled with surprises and I’m not sure any of us know who we will be left with after all is said and done.

But since I really don’t believe there’s much difference in Republicans or Democrats, I always vote Libertarian. I just can’t bring myself to vote for someone i don’t like, even if I consider it a vote against someone I dislike more. I want the Libertarians to know that I think like they do. That I think they would be the best!

You know, Lolly, you have a point about the voices – none of them do a thing for me. I understand your desire to vote for the libertarian candidate – I can’t go there this time out – I feel that there is too much at stake at this point. Unfortunately.

  9. I agree there’s about a hair’s difference between Hillary and Obama. I just like him better. Their differences on health care plans are notable, assuming you support universal health care at all (and I don’t).

The Che Guevarra flag picture… I’d worry about it if Obama were standing in front of it. Otherwise, I’d venture to say he can’t be held personally responsible for every move made by every one of his campaign workers.

The flag pin in the lapel… he doesn’t wear one, but has in the past. That doesn’t sound to me like a refusal to wear one. Do you wear one, WC? Why, or why not? I wore one right after 9/11; it just made me feel better, more a part of the whole, showing support for my fellow Americans. But I don’t anymore. Have I become less patriotic since then? I don’t think so.

So who will I vote for? I don’t know yet. Depends on who the nominees are. I’ll have to compromise something to vote for any of them. Meantime, I’m getting a kick out of the most interesting campaign since the ’60s.

    Hey 30!
I am not interested in universal healthcare at all – I mean, cripes with the quality of healthcare we get from the private sector now, I can’t imagine how crappy government sponsored healthcare could be. But I think anyone who has been to the DMV or any other government agency can get an idea of what fun we’d have in store for us in that department.

No, he wasn’t standing in front of it – but when asked about it, the response was lukewarm at best – and yeah, I do wear a flag pin but that’s not the point. The point is the guy is running for the job of leading this country – I kind of expect him to be more patriotic than I am. Maybe that’s expecting too much but I don’t think so. As to whether or not you’ve become less patriotic, I wouldn’t have a clue and again, you and I are not running for the highest office in the land.

Hmmm…most interesting campaign since the 60s? Is there a particular campaign you are referring to – just curious. And while it has been full of surprises, personally I’m not sure I’m finding it interesting – I’m finding it more painful than anything else. I am honestly concerned about the future of our country (all jokes and jest aside) and this campaign cycle has done nothing but increase my level of concern.

  10. Hi WC,

Evidence of Barack’s communist leanings is abundant. Note that he is ranked as the most liberal Senator currently serving by several groups that do that sort of thing. Ted Kennedy is pleased enough with him to sing in Spanish at an Obama rally. Plus, as he mentions in his first book, or so I have been told, his great mentor during his early years is an open advocate for communism. Sorry, I forget the man’s name, but if that’s important I’ll hunt it up for you. Next, just look at the policies he’s advocating. He wants the Government to pay for health care for those who won’t carry their own weight. He wants the Government to make mortgage payments for those stupid and greedy enough to buy homes they can’t afford. He has even gone to the extreme of suggesting that the Government make up the income difference when a person looses a job and takes a new one that doesn’t pay as well! That sounds indisputably like the communist mantra, from each according to their ability to each according to their needs. Beyond that, he wants to open talks with Cuba with no preconditions, and wants to kill NAFTA but, as far as I know, hasn’t suggested cutting off trade with China. He’s also against private ownership of firearms and is anti-religion, both opinions popular with communists.

    the Grit

    Hey Grit,
Oh my gosh, I heard that singing of Teddy Kennedy’s and it was painful. 😯

I hadn’t heard about the making up the difference in the job deficit routine. Wow, what an angle. Gee, I wonder who might be paying for that?

Well, it seems this is getting crazier and crazier. I don’t even know what to say…

I too am amazed Annie with the media silence on this. I did posts on botn of the above issues. Unbelievable that they would hold back with their media darling.

This is whether we like it or not, the most important election of our lifetime with all that could possibly be at stake.

    Hey Ange,
Now that you mention the name, I think I have heard something about that.

I think once the dem candidate is determined – things may shift even on the part of the media. We all know they aren’t able to stay nice for too long – even toward the ones they supposedly love.

  12. I can’t wade through all the details in your post and the replies, but YES Obama’s platform is pretty consistent with Hillary’s and I voted for Hillary in the primary. Che Guevara’s reverence in Texas is about dismantling a despotic regime and is not easily explained. My conservative, Republican WHITE brother (fan of Rush Limbaugh, W and McCain) named his first-born after Che. Go figure.

My sadness for America for the last decade has been the increasing tendency to demonize the “other” side. McCain is not a devil, W is not a devil, even Karl Rove and (gulp) Dick Cheney are not devils. Nor are Bill or Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, or Barack Obama. We are ALL Americans. My parents were Democrats and always voted that way. But whoever won (even Nixon, bless their hearts) was THEIR president. What a beautiful, uniquely American example. I pray that my fellow Americans do not allow talking heads, campaign managers and bloggers to forever destroy the “United” in United States.

    Hello Roc,
I can appreciate your view(s) – I too am saddened by the demonization of ‘the other side’ by both sides as well. We are all Americans and it would be nice to see us acting that way, instead of always taking sides. I’ve actually decided to take a break from politics for a while partially for this reason. I can’t stand the fighting and conflict – so I am seeking other more inspiring topics for discussion. Thanks for reading.
