Maybe it's All About Cats?

This past week has really been a bit strange – especially in the blogosphere. For the most part it has seemed excedingly quiet and my stats have been awful. Which is always depressing to a blogger I guess and I know we aren’t supposed to take it to heart – stuff happens – there are slumps, blah blah. I know that. I’ve been at this for quite a while and you’d think I’d have learned by now. Still, it gets me down.

I spend a lot of time coming up with ideas for posts and writing them and so on. Just like everybody else so when it turns out that the effort doesn’t seem to be worth it… Oh well. But I do wonder maybe that’s the problem, maybe I do spend too much time working on posts. Maybe I should just do that whatever is in my mind at the moment thing. It does seem to work for a lot of bloggers. I don’t know. Maybe I should just start trolling for lots of pictures of cats, dogs, mice and hamsters doing stupid things. I just got an email from a friend proclaiming how funny the contents were and when I opened it I found the standard 10 pics off the Cheezburger site. Yet people just can’t seem to get enough of them. Maybe it is all about the cats.

I mean who doesn’t want to see a bunch of pics of crazy cats doing crazy things? Playing banjos and golf or jumping up in the air with a funny photo-shopped expression on their face – now that’s entertainment, yeah? Although cats really have been done to death, so I’d probably have to find a lesser used animal. Maybe a bass fish or a bunny? Bunnies are funny, right? Or hedgehogs, they don’t get very much play in the blogosphere and that seems rather unfair – salamanders too are a greatly ignored species for funny pics as well.

Perhaps words are passe? It could be, I think honestly that people do think in pictures, so to speak. I mean when you think of something you don’t get an image of text in your mind – you get an image, right? So maybe pictorial posts should be the order of the day? In fact, I probably should have done this post in pictures instead of words because you’re probably not still reading – you’ve moved on to find some funny pictures that make you spit coffee all over your monitor. Am I right? I thought so.

It could very well be that writers are dinosaurs, a breed moving dangerously close to the edge of extinction. I know I spent 3 hours yesterday looking for some poetry to read on the internet. I went to one of those sites that is supposed to be a directory for poetry/writing blogs. I was astounded to discover that I found just about everything but. Even the poetry blogs didn’t have poetry, they had marketing news, politics, funny pics, commentary and meanderings of the author’s daily routine – but no poetry. Out of the 100 sites I went to, I found ten that had some poetry, of those maybe 5 that seemed to really be about poetry. Shocking I must say. Shocking.

Oh well, I guess this writer will have to change with the times, start using pictures and learn how to use photoshop. I may need to up my RAM though, cuz those graphics eat up space like nobody’s business. What do you guys think? Should I change the name of the blog to “I Can Haz a Chilidog”?

  1. i’m still reading!

Don’t be overwhelmed, Chica. i understand how you feel. My stats’ve been sad, of course, i barely post any more. But even before that, my stats have been mediocre at best. But i know that even so, there are a precious few that still love creative writings.

The thing is, you have been and will be true to yourself. Stats are that little devil, a bad penny if you will. A waggy finger. We need to take our power back from them.

    Feel better friend.

    Hey Chica,
You may be right – they do seduce those fricking stats. Screw em. No worries, I’ll never stop writing and probably never stop blogging but there are those days when you think – jeez louise. You know? Thanks for this and for always being a friend.

  2. It’s awful when you feel overwhelmed. Don’t worry so much about a dry spell when it comes to hits, logic dictates that those are going to happen from time to time for whatever reason. Though logic doesn’t help much when you’re felling bad about it.

Just thought I’d let you know that unless something changes drastically for me, I’m here. πŸ™‚ It’s the best I can offer. Take care, I hope you cheer up soon.

Hey Crystal, thanks so much for coming by. You’re being here is a lot. Believe me. And I appreciate very much and you are always welcome. Thank you.

  3. *waves hand* I’m still here and yes I think that maybe you are overthinking it just a little. Don’t worry about it too much. If its any consolation the whole blogosphere and indeed the whole internet seems to be a bit quiet lately.

Stay true to yourself and your blog – keep doing what you have been and don’t change because everyone else is. If you decide to change what you do, make sure its because you have decided to change, not because everyone else is.

    Oh Gem,
I know you’re still there *waving back* Well the chance of my actually changing to follow any trend is pretty slim because I’m stubborn and see things my own way anyway – still that fantasy of having a bagillion hits all because I posted some damn pictures is awfully tempting… πŸ˜‰

  4. I never worry about stats. If people want to come they’ll come if not, I write my shit for myself anyway. Although I like playing around with the new craze with my LOLBoobs and LOLPorn.

Just do what you do best and don’t worry about the peripherial bs.

You know I love you, darlin’, but you’re a blogwhore just like the rest of us. πŸ˜‰ I don’t suppose I won freak of the week, huh? Of course not. Bummer. I’m just not freaky enough.

  5. Annie,

There are enough “Seinfeld blogs” that ramble on incessantly about nothing. I prefer the blogs where the writer does actually put some thought into his or her posts. I enjoy reading yours because they’re insightful. Keep it up.

I’m not a big fan of cats, either. πŸ˜‰

  6. Hi Annie,

It’s not just you. I use lots of pictures and political humor, as you know, and my traffic to those posts is also down. On the other hand, I’m still getting plenty of hits on posts about naked PETA protests and nude celebrities. I blame it on the news media and Government for having anything to do with bailing out Wall Street from the latest “crisis.” This makes people depressed, so they don’t want to think, but just look at cute pictures. On the other hand, there may be a demand for posts on how to commit suicide?!

    the Grit

    Hey Grit,
Great idea! Yeah, people will love to come to my blog for that. Yikes – maybe I need some photoshop lessons, eh? πŸ™‚

  7. My stats have been lower than usual. Maybe it’s just the time of the year. I’m not sure what that would have to do with anything but it sounds good. I don’t need photos and comedy to read a blog although that is what mine seems to be all about. I like blogs that are interesting to me and yours is. You always get me thinking about more important things than toilets. Like the one you did called “Following”. I found that one totally interesting and thought provoking. It also made me realize I had better be careful because I could easily become a stalker. πŸ™‚

    Oh Joanie,
You really think you could become a stalker with that cane and vid camera out in plain sight? That is a hysterical idea. I love the image. I wouldn’t mind you stalking me cuz chances are after I caught you, you ‘d make me something delicious for dinner and then we’d be friends. πŸ™‚

  8. I admit I get a kick out of the LOLcats but I totally understand where you are coming from Annie. I like the LOLcats when I want a quick, cheap laugh and don’t want to hurt my brain too much. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like a well-written and thought out post like yours! Although I sometimes get a chuckle out of silly picture blogs, I know that they are not the type of site I can spend much time on and it’s more for comic relief because sometimes life or the blogosphere just has too much drama going on. I would easily get sick of them if they were the only place I spent my online time – much like reality television. But I visit a variety of types of blogs and I think the ones with real meat in them, like yours, are always going to have an audience because people DO appreciate good writing and there are real writers and readers in the blogosphere. The novelty of some goofy blogs will wear off and new ones will pop up. There are audiences for all kinds of blogs. I’m just thinking people are busier than normal and trying to find ways to make ends meet in this economy. So it’s probably just a fluke that readership is down lately.

    Hey Teens,
Yeah, I knew you were a closet funny cat pic person, but I love you anyway. πŸ˜‰ Yeah, I don’t know what to say about why, nothing I can do about it though, so I guess worrying about it is pointless. Thanks for always reading, honey, I know you do and I appreciate it.

    Oh Di,
You always cheer me up. Don’t worry, I won’t ever stop writing – it’s just sometimes I don’t know what to write, then it gets dicey. You know? Thank you for making me your first stop, that is beyond sweet and groovy and cool.

  10. One bit of advice. When you start blogging to make other folks happy, it’s time to quit. Your blog is your self expression not a means to keep the masses happy.

Don’t count hits or links. Just enjoy the thrill of expressing yourself and getting satisfaction of those few, quality folks who still care what you have to say…

Well if it isnt my old chum, Ham. How the heck are you? I think though you are more philosophical about this than I am. Just not built that way – basically I’m not happy unless I’m worrying about something… at least a little. But point taken. Thanks.

  11. I’ve been a terrible blogger lately. AND a terrible reader!!!

I just lose my blog motivation sometimesm I start feel like I’m writing about the same things over and over.

I mean how many times can I write about how ridiculous my children behave?

But its my life–so its often what spews out of me.

I’ve always enjoyed your blog–especially your humor posts!!!

So I myself plan to keep reading!!

I hear you Ramblin’ I go through the same thing – I feel repetitive and like, what’s the point, you know? But the thing is I guess that until your readers tell you to stop writing what you’re writing then maybe we should fret less. Thanks for the readership, sweetie, I do appreciate it.

  12. Hey, I always love your blog! And every time I visit, it seems like you have TONS of readers and tons of comments. I always think this when I visit: “Wow, WriterChick sure is popular.” Seriously!

But I do agree that only silly pictures of hamsters and cats are going to make the big surges in stats. πŸ˜›

Actually, it was comforting to read about someone else feeling like I do. I was having those same emotions about a work project. I wrote several people looking for input on an article, and they all ignored me. 😦 It really was kind of depressing.

Maybe this week will be better for both of us!

    Hey Dube,
Aw sorry about the being ignored thing – that does suck and I’ve been there. Me? Popular? I dunno about that – I have managed to bribe a few people into reading and commenting over the years so…. you know….

Well at the very least we can commiserate, eh? Anytime you want input on something, I’m around, feel free to drop me a line.

  13. I, too, have always envied your readership. I’d be happy to get a fraction of the visitors you get. But I’ve seen a slump too. I think everyone’s been watching the news the last few days. I know I have.

BTW, I love LOLcats, but I’m a cat owner, so I’m biased. πŸ™‚

Looks like your readership has picked up 30 – it takes time to build up a readership – it sure took me time, you’ll get there. You may be right about the news – personally, I’ve avoided the news for the last three months and feel ever so much better. Maybe people should be reading blogs and forget the news, they might feel better too. πŸ˜‰

Maybe it’s time to re-examine why you blog. What are your goals, objectives, reasons for blogging? I know that when I sat down and seriously thought about my blog I ended up taking in a different direction that re-energized me and gave me Tigger-like enthusiasm all over again.

If you want the questions I asked myself when rethinking my blog, send me an email.

    Happy week!

  15. CHILIDOG. Mmmmmmm….

Anywho – it’s been pretty quiet at my place too. I’ve been running around the blogosphere like crazy trying to bolster new readers. There must be something about the start of fall that has people super-busy.

So, you like chilidogs too, eh, MJ? Ever go to Pink’s in L.A.? If you ever come, we’ll go – you’ll love it. Could be it is the beginning of fall or just that blogs are not so interesting to people anymore. Don’t really know – maybe we can figure it out over a chilidog? πŸ˜‰

  16. I want WORDS! WORDS is what I want! I agree, it is frustrating to see blogs that have hauled a bunch of pics together, thrown in a caption or two, and then have 70 comments. I had a little private rant or two about that, BUT as others have already said, you have to be true to you. BTW, I answered Alex’s questions re: my blog and the answers were quite enlightening. I really suggest you get them from him and answer them. (Clever boy, my brother is).

Oh Panther, my darling girl – then you shall have words, lots of them, pretty ones, short ones, tall ones, fat ones, thin ones – anything for you my dear. Yeah, that brother of yours, he’s determined to get us all in shape, isn’t he? Jeez and I really liked being a mess. πŸ˜‰

  17. I used to study my stats, but I don’t any more. They changed the dashboard setup over at wordpress and now I don’t bother to click on the stats part. I hope you stick to your principles and keep writing. But I sincerely hope you don’t lose sleep over it, or let writing blog posts in your head take up all your brain space.

    Hey Windy,
Really? How did they change it? I will always write – no worries there (or maybe worries for those who don’t want me to πŸ˜‰ ) Losing sleep, not so much – writing posts in my head, bingo. One out of two isn’t bad, eh? I’ve been given a big chill pill by my friend Moe, so maybe that will help.

  18. I am with Ham. I have been lax but I love your blog. It is a ray of sunshine or deep thoughts. Totally refreshing.

Who cares about the stats? It is a place to express yourself and make us think. In my blog I just rant and rave about what I consider to be a threat to our country..LOL! So 2 people look at it..it sure helps me get that frustration out!

You my girl, have real talent and I would truly miss it .
BTW, Cats are too plentiful now. Just saying..

    Hugs to ya!

    Hey Ange!
I’m sure more than 2 people read your awesome blog. Express myself? Maybe. Make people think? Jeez that sounds like a lot of responsibility. LOL. Yes, cats are too plentiful – damn missed another trend. Don’t you hate it when that happens? πŸ˜‰
