I'm Worried…

Yes folks I truly am. First it was the mortgage fiasco and the subsequent bailout. Then came the auto bailout and the digital television voucher program. The bagillion dollar stimulus bill (where are the people who were criticizing Bush for a mere 87 billion now?) that is going to just create a bunch of government jobs designed only to keep the government huge and the public (that’s you and me, bub) at their mercy.

Ordinarily, this stuff would roll off my back. It is after all, business as usual in this bizarre world we live in, right? But here’s the thing that really worries me – the perception of the economy. I’m not saying that it isn’t in bad shape but the perception, the belief that what we are being told about it is stronger than the reality and will break our backs sooner than the economy itself.

There is an old political adage that says ‘perception is reality’ well I’m here to tell you that that is the truth. For years now, the media and any two-bit politician who was powerless and wanted some power has been hammering us with this idea that the economy was in trouble. And it started long before there were the problems we now face. I suppose you could say that these people were visionaries and saw it coming. But did they? Or did they just create a self-fulfilling prophecy for us? Did they just keep hammering away until we all started to believe it and became more and more desperate? Until we apathetically just allowed the government to make funny money to pay for a stimulus that is bound to actually collapse the economy?

What many people don’t seem to understand is what stimulates the economy is business and commerce. And yet what this stimulus package seeks to do is destroy business and commerce. It seeks to make the government the owner of all the major business concerns. Of course Congress will bail-out the auto industry, the banking industry and any other industry that comes along and kisses its ass. What better way to make the government the owner of those concerns? It’s not unlike Jimmy the Loan Shark. Sure, he’ll help you out but man if that loan isn’t paid back you lose your kneecaps and your business. How on earth do we think this is any kind of solution?

I feel like screaming on a daily basis. Yet, what is the point of it? Everyone is already there. They already believe what is being dished out. Businesses are freaking out and letting people go. People are going onto unemployment rather than looking for another job or even starting their own companies or going concern. People are bailing on their mortgages, letting them go to foreclosure and then saving all that mortgage payment money while the bank takes nearly a year to evict them. Nobody is spending any more because they are sure there won’t be any money to spend in the future. We’re sunk, folks. We’re really sunk if we don’t stop buying into this crap.

Contrary to popular belief, the economy goes in cycles – it is simply a fact of life. And if people just knew and accepted that and didn’t try to ‘do’ something to change it by creating bullshit solutions like a stimulus package for instance – the cycles would be much shorter and we’d all be doing better.

I know that my pleas are falling on deaf ears and if anyone even comments on this post I’ll be more than surprised. All I can say is that when the government owns everything, including our souls, it will be too late for any of us to protest. You think things are ugly now? Wait a couple of years, it’s going to make this look like a ferris wheel spin around the amusement park.

UPDATE:

For further insanity on this bailout fiasco go here to read about the latest freakanomics solution. We, the taxpayers are bailing out Citibank? Come on! And all while they are jacking up our interest rates with gleeful abandon? That’s like getting beaten and then set on fire by the same bully. Oh my gawd! Where is this great change that has been touted for the last year? This is supposed to be good? I’m telling you folks, start stuffing your mattresses – unless you want all your money in government banks (the better for the IRS to seize your assets and freeze your accounts????) with no interest, heavy fees and likely bad math. Crap!

  1. I’m worried too. It may not always be in the forefront of my mind, because after all; I have 3 kids, a husband, 2 dogs, and a cat to care for- a mortgage, car payments, orthodontist payments, not to mention bills to pay, and the laundry list goes on and on. However, this subject is never too far from my mind- kinda hovering over me like a dark cloud. HELL YES I AM WORRIED! Worried, and feel helpless because it’s rare to come upon a person (like you) that feels the same exact way.

I’m not worried from the scare tactics, I’m worried that every single person I see around me is buying into them being led around like puppy dogs. Just following the “leader” and thinking he has the solution. GAH!

    Hey Bella,
You’ve got that right – follow the leader is pretty much exactly what we’ve become a nation of – puppy dogs, looking for our daily treats in exchange for just a few tricks and being kept on a leash. Time to be stashing as much money and valuables in the mattress as possible I’d say.

  2. It’s a great irony, isn’t it, that politicians are throwing money away to fix this financial problem. On the surface it seems like the thing to do, doesn’t it? But not to an awful lot of economists out there. Perhaps they know something we don’t…

    Hey Tony,
I’d be willing to bet money (if I had any) that the economists know a heck of a lot more than we do.

  3. Perception has a lot to do with it, and we’d all be better off not paying so much attention to the scare tactics and rants from both Washington and the media. If you still have a job, a roof over your head, food on the table, a happy home and family, and the sun rose this morning — you’re okay! And so am I. (Well, I am until I look at my retirement accounts and how much I’ve lost and how few years I have for them to recover, and that scares me a lot. But for today, this month, this year, I’m okay.)

    Hey 30,
Yeah, you’ve got the right attitude – we might add to that, that one should stop watching the news and reading the newspapers and maybe get as much info about current events from bloggers who have no vested interests other than alerting people to what is happening. Still, I am really leaning toward the stuffing your mattress mode of savings and retirement funding. 🙄

  5. I believe you’re absolutely right. I’ve stopped watching the news because it makes me physically ill & there seems to be nothing at all that I can do to change the consensus, no matter how misinformed. Especially when those in power appear to be screaming “depression” from the rooftops. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Hey Pamela and welcome to my little dive. Well I think there are some things we can do…at least I hope so. There is a group that has formed who is loudly protesting all these bailouts and I plan to do another post with their links and so forth. I think we all better start screaming loud and long – these jokers are out of control and we can’t let them get past the point of no return or we are sunk. Even Obama must not want to be known as the new Depression president, don’t you think? 🙄

  6. Hi WC,

I ranted about that the other day. And, if memory serves, I had a rant or three about it before the election. It deserves ranting about, and the more people who do so the better.

On the other hand, I have lots of experience at being poor and the liberals are so in love with the Internet that their Government will make sure everyone has access to it, which means that, once they drive the world economy into depression, I should be able to make a good living with a Cheap Living blog. Speaking of which, I’d better go check on domain name availability 🙂

    Hey Grit,
Yup, deserving of many rants I’d say. In fact, I have a follow up post that will come out shortly. I like your idea on the new website – I may have to do something like that myself. Having had vast experience in it, why not get paid for my expertise, eh? 😉

  7. hubby and I are working on paying off as much of our debt as we can while we have some extra and reducing our consumption. Hopefully the strategies and steps we are taking now will see us through whatever comes next because I reckon our governments are just looking at easy solutions with no real long term impact apart from them owning most everything of course.

Mistress B´s last blog post..Simple Pleasures Sunday

    Hey B,
Sounds like a plan – though in your position I’d do it a little differently. I’d take whatever extra was coming in and put half of it toward debt reduction and the other half in my mattress, ditto on whatever you save from reduced consumption. The thing is, if it all goes to hell in a handbasket, cash is going to be a necessary item to have on hand, you know? Perhaps it’s just my paranoia, but it seems to me that the government is leaning toward the idea of taking over all the banks – that being the case, I don’t want my money in there, beyond what I need to pay my monthly bills, you know?

  8. I’m a firm believer in Perception is Reality. we saw it often in this house. It is scary .. people stop spending money because they are afraid of losing their jobs, which makes things worse and actually ends up being the reason they will lose their job. Bad cycle to be in …

You nailed Girl, people make their worst fears a reality by doing stuff like this. Honestly, if people just said, ‘bullshit’ and went about their business, things would be better. I’m not saying they would turn around per se – but it would definitely be better. You know?
