I came back to L.A. with little more than the clothes on my back and a few odds and ends. In fact, in the last six months I haven’t had what you would call a proper desk. When I left L.A. I gave up my trusty double pedastal to the local thrift store. Once on the east coast I was given a large table to use as a desk. It worked okay but I could never find a chair that was high enough or comfortable enough to use. It made sitting at the computer a chore.
Once I got back here, while staying at Zelda’s, she offered me a tiny computer cart which was really a tv tray style set up for a laptop. Nope that didn’t work too well either. I later scored a narrow but longer card table kind of gizmo and at least it was something I could put my legs under. However, any sudden movement caused it to go into all manner of shivers and quakes.
Since I moved to my new place, I’ve been jonesing for an actual real desk, one with drawers and everything. Well thanks to a local thing out here called freecycle.com I found one. Or one found me. Yes, that’s it pictured above. Okay, granted it isn’t the prettiest desk I’ve ever seen, not by a long shot but it is a desk. A real desk. It has drawers and everything. It also doesn’t shake or wobble if I lean on it and finally I’m able to fit everything on it, in it and don’t need all the makeshift solutions I was using for files and stuff like that.
In fact, I think I’ll actually be able to find things and keep track of things now that I have drawers and such. You never realize how much a desk is necessary until you don’t have one. Thank you, Farrin, for your contribution to my fresh start – I hope your move is successful. Bless you for giving me a desk which I will treasure and probably figure out how to jazz up too.
Now…if only I could get a mattress…sleeping on the box spring has been a little tough on the old back. LOL. It’s always something.

I have my grandfather’s huge old beautiful desk in my studio, but that is for my artwork. There is a desk in the study, but it is the realm of the Lion and the Little Lion, and frankly drives me insane with the clutter and lack of organization. Not to mention the fact that I would have to fight for it, and would likely lose. So, I work all over the place, which means my papers are all over the place. It’s not really working out so well. Ya, desks are IMPORTANT.

Hi Annie,
I picked up my desk over 20 years ago from a second hand shop for $70 – delivered. It’s a secretary’s desk from the days before computers, as you can tell by the spring loaded pull out shelf which was meant to hold a typewriter. It’s 2.5 feet deep by 5 feet wide and solid enough to dance on, but that’s another story. Oh, and on the side opposite the typewriter slab it has a pull out writing board. If you can find one, I highly recommend it.

Technology has made the perfect desk so much harder to find. Goodness knows I don’t have one. Mine was designed with a big deep space for a CRT monitor, a slide-out keyboard tray on a lower level, etc. But with the change to a flat-panel monitor and the demise of the chair that was the perfect height, everything is all out of whack now. And for some reason the specialized computer workstation/desk thingys never include drawers! People need drawers!

You’re so right. In fact, I’m not sure there is such a thing anymore. With the technology evolving so quickly by the time we get what we think we need, we need something else. In my case, I just try to keep it simple – ample drawer space, a big desk top and plain design. Not pretty but functional you know? And yeah, what is up with these guys who think we don’t need drawers? Doh! 😉
